The Latest on "Honey Boo Boo" | Famecrawler

01 honey boo boo family1 300x212 Whats New With Honey Boo Boo?

We'll be seeing more of Honey Boo Boo's family soon.

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo aired its season finale last night on TLC ? which should leave you feeling either disappointed or relieved, depending on which side of the Love It/Loathe It fence you?re on.

For the last few weeks, our national attention has been drawn to the antics of Alana ?Honey Boo Boo? Thompson and her unique family. Jimmy Kimmel even made a joke about the show in the first few minutes of the Emmys broadcast. Meanwhile, Honey Boo Boo and her mother ?Mama June? Shannon have become the hottest reality personalities in town.

So if you think we won?t be hearing about the family for a while now that the show is on hiatus, think again! Here?s what we?ve found out about Alana and her clan in just the last couple of days?

They?ll be home for the holidays. And on our home TVs, too. According to Us Weekly, TLC has ordered more episodes of the hit series, which will feature Honey Boo Boo, Mama June, Sugar Bear, Pumpkin, Chubbs and Chickadee celebrating Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Sugar Bear is back home. After an ATV accident, Alana?s dad, Mike ?Sugar Bear? Thompson developed an infection in his leg that landed him in the hospital for nearly two weeks. It was thought that he might need surgery ? and possibly even require amputation. But the infection has cleared up with strong doses of antibiotics, and cameras caught him returning home yesterday.

Little Kaitlyn won?t be getting corrective surgery yet. On last night?s episode, June?s oldest daughter, Anna ?Chickadee? Shannon, gives birth to a baby girl. Viewers also learned that the baby has an unusual birth condition ? two thumbs on her right hand. But contrary to what you may think, the condition isn?t necessarily easy to correct. June recently explained that the extra appendage will be staying for a while. ?The doctor doesn?t want to do anything right now because they don?t know the full function of the other thumb or if they?re connected,? she says. Removing the thumb might cause Kaitlyn to lose function in the rest of her hand. ?They don?t want to make any rash decisions.?

The family is enjoying its fifteen minutes of fame. June bristles at the suggestion that she?s harming Alana and her sisters in any way by doing the show. ?I don?t exploit Alana,? she told RadarOnline. ?I would never exploit my kids. Critics are critics, and everyone has their opinions, but I am not doing anything wrong. It?s always been about fun, and it?s an experience in life they can look back at. We watch the show and wish they put in more stuff!?

They may be getting more money for the show. Holla?! According to an insider source, the family is negotiating a higher salary for a new season, and will probably end up receiving around $8,000 per episode. Still, that?s nowhere near the $30 million the Kardashian family reportedly is receiving for their next three seasons.

They?re not as unusual as you might think. Okay, not everyone tries owning a miniature pig or goes on the kiddie beauty-pageant circuit. But in one aspect, June and her daughters are very much like many of their fellow Georgia families: Nearly 40 percent of families in the state are at risk of health problems related to childhood obesity. A major Georgia pediatric hospital issued a statement: ?[B]ased on the children and families we see at Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta, the truth is that Honey Boo Boo and her family?s health habits may be more of the norm in Georgia than everyone would like to believe.?

Will you be redneckognizing this fun bunch next season?

Poll: How Do You React to a Region Locked Console? | GamePolitics

Let?s say there?s a new console coming out that you?ve totally got your eye on.? It?s a groovy piece of kit, it?s reasonably priced and it?s got a bunch of games you want to play.? You?ve got your money saved up and you?re just ticking off the calendar days until its launch.

And then you find out it?s region locked.

What now?? Do you buy the console anyway and resign yourself to the fact that you won?t be importing any games you otherwise would have bought in a heartbeat?? Do you mod your console so that it will play import games?? Do you even care about import games in the first place?

Maybe region locking is such a deal breaker that you flat-out refuse to buy the console.? Or maybe you?re hardcore and will import an additional console to play a different territory?s games.

Such is the subject of this week?s poll, folks.? Keep in mind, I?m not necessarily referring to the Wii U.? Maybe you?re a Sony gamer through and through and are waiting on pins and needles for the PlayStation 4.? How would you react if it turns out the PS4 is region locked?

Vote in the poll and let us know.? Write spiffy comments in the ever so appropriately named ?Comments? section.? Send us email at SuperPACPodcast@gmail.com.? Make sure you finish your homework before you play video games into the wee small hours of the morning.? Brush your teeth before you finally go to bed.? Did you remember to let the dog out?? Maybe that?s why there?s a puddle by the back door.

Sorry.? Where was I?

Oh yes.? We?ll discuss the poll results and your comments on the next week?s Super Podcast Action Committee and so get cracking!? The poll closes sometime this weekend.? Tick tock, tick tock?

Common Problems That Can Develop in Automotive Air Conditioning

Last updated 17 hours ago

Nothing is more uncomfortable or inconvenient than a broken down air conditioner in the middle of the summer. Fortunately, you can use these auto repair tips to catch problems in your car?s air conditioner to keep the cold air blowing as long as you need it. Early prevention and maintenance can also help you avoid many of the problems associated with damaged automotive air conditioning systems, including:

  • Uncomfortable Temperatures ? Your air conditioner won?t be much use if it only blows warm air. Thankfully, an uncomfortable temperature is one of the simplest air conditioning system problems in the book. The issue is usually caused by a low volume of refrigerant. Have your auto repair technician check for reservoir leaks when your refrigerant is being refilled, as an unrepaired leak will result in temperature control problems throughout the summer.
    ?
  • Low Airflow ? Some air conditioners refuse to blow straight on target. If your air conditioner is suffering this problem, then you likely have a broken vacuum supply line. This series of tubes helps to lead air to the right vent or exhaust. Ask your mechanic about vacuum supply line issues if your fan is working but your passengers aren?t receiving any air.
    ?
  • Excess Noise ? The soft whirr of fans is typically the only sound an automotive air conditioner should make. In fact, additional noises from your vehicle?s air conditioner may indicate a serious problem. For example, these loud noises may be a result of a broken down compressor or a corroded fan belt. Keep your air conditioner components in good repair to avoid these noisy problems.
    ?
  • Offensive Odors ? You may notice strange odors coming from an aging car?s air conditioner. This smell is likely the result of mold and bacteria that have taken up resident in the evaporator. Let a team of professionals wash away these smells with specialty chemicals that won?t harm the engine.

The experts at Dekalb Tire and Automotive Repair can have your automotive repairs finished quickly. We pride ourselves on our flawless repairs and great customer service. Learn more about our company and our technicians today by calling our office at (678) 954-1728.

U.S. Embassy calls out Muslim Brotherhood for conflicting tweets

The U.S. called out the Muslim Brotherhood for apparently tweeting a different set of messages? -- a kind one in English, and a one in Arabic of a different tone -- as demonstrators and security forces were battling outside the embassy in Cairo.

The? Muslim Brotherhood's? English-language Twitter account? (@Ikwanweb) retweeted a message from deputy head, Khairat? El-Shater, saying he was "relieved none of @USembassycairo staff was harmed" and hoped U.S.-Egypt relations "will sustain the turbulence of Tuesday's events."

However, according to ahramonline.com,? the the Brotherhood's? Arabic-language Twitter account and its website were praising the protests staged against a U.S.-made film that some Muslims deem insulting to the Prophet Mohammad. The Brotherhood's messages? also called for a million-man march on Friday.

That prompted and interesting response from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo: ""Thanks. By the way, have you checked out your own Arabic feeds? I hope you know we read those too."

Later the Brotherhood responded, ""we understand you're under a lot of stress, but it will be more helpful if you point out exactly the Arabic feed of concern."

The exchange in cyberspace underscores the relationship between Egypt and the U.S.

President Obama said in an interview with Spanish-language network Telemundo that the U.S would not consider Egypt an ally, nor considers them an enemy.

Egypt is a "new government that is trying to find its way," Obama said to Telemundo. The president warned however, that if the Egyptian government takes actions showing they're not taking responsibility, then it would "be a real big problem.

Egypt's Islamist president Mohamed Mursi, Thursday said he backed peaceful protests but not attacks on embassies after Egyptians angry at a the film climbed into the U.S. embassy in Cairo and tore down the American flag.

The New York Times noted that Egypt, not Libya where U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens was killed, may be a bigger political issue for the U.S.

Martin S. Indyk, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel, told the Times. "On the one hand, you didn't have Americans getting killed, but this was the fourth time an embassy was assaulted in Cairo with the Egyptian police doing precious little."

"And where was President Morsi's condemnation of this?" Indyk asked.

Gamestop And The Wikipad - Video Game Blog, Video Game Reviews

Though it was announced over year ago at CES, few are still aware of the soon-to-be-released gaming tablet device known as ?The Wikipad?. Independently developed by Wikipad Inc., the device doesn?t appear to be much more than regular tablet computer (and not much of good one either), however it has attracted attention lately due to a mysterious controller-attachment that sports a full suit of sensors, dual analogue sticks, a directional pad, standard 4-button input pad, and 4 shoulder buttons (two on the left and two on the right). However what is most intriguing about the Wikipad is its partnership with game-streaming service Gaikai. For those of you unfamiliar with Gaikai, just imagine if your friend had a high-powered computer and he could load a game on it, but you control it from your computer and the game itself is streamed to your monitor. This would essentially allow the Wikipad to play the most graphic and processor intensive games on the market, despite being a tablet with 1 Gigabyte of internal memory.

So what is this noise about Gamestop, then? It would seem that Wikipad Inc. plans to sell their product exclusively to Gamestop. By clicking the pre-order link on Wikipad.com, you?re taken to Gamestop?s online store, and greeted with a frightening price tag of $500. This presents two rather large problems for the Wikipad, right from the get-go.

For one, consider the fact that Gamestop makes most of its profit in selling used games, meaning its core customer group doesn?t like to spend large amounts of money on new products, they shop at Gamestop for cheap, used devices, not some new tablet-gaming-whatever for $500, and we don?t even know if that?s where it ends- Gaikai may very well charge separate rates for its streaming services (which it probably will), piling on greater and greater expenses. Those looking to buy it as a tablet computing device would most likely go with something like Google?s Nexus 7 which doesn?t even cost half as much as the Wikipad.

For two, consider the competition. For instance, why buy a Wikipad when you can buy a new Playstation Vita with a 3G access bundle and?8new games (considering the average price is about $27), or even a brand new Nintendo 3DS with 9 games? The fact that it is a tablet computer doesn?t matter much in the grand scheme of things, considering you can either of the previous systems along with an actually decent tablet computer and still have at least $100 left. Having a tablet and a gaming device in one shell also matters very little because any portability of the actual computer is lost to the bulk of the attachable controller shell for gaming.

With $500, you could buy a new Playstation Vita, with HD Remakes of Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, Gravity Rush, Resistance: Burning Skies, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Little Big Planet, Lollipop Chainsaw, and Assassins Creed 3. But if you would really rather spend all of that on a Wikipad, it hits shelves in Gamestops on October 31st of this year.

Dude Meister Blogs: RE:View: Things To Do In a Retirement Home ...

A frustratingly frequent piece of advice given to young writers is "Write what you know"; something that newcomer Aneurin Wright has taken to the next level with his debut graphic novel/memoir, as Things To Do tells the moving story of what happened to himself when he was 29 and Unemployed, looking after his father Neil in a Retirement Home Trailer Park.

Neil is sick.?Emphysema ails him after a lifetime of?cigarettes and stress. Nye (that's Wright himself) is his son, struggling to find work after graduating from art school and finds himself in a predicament -- to care for his imperfect father through his illness as per the rest of his family's wishes. So off he sets to spend the next number of months beside Neil in a trailer. Oh yeah, and Nye's a blue minotaur?and Neil a blue rhino...

Whilst the majority of the other characters around them are human, this bizarre animal imagery is never addressed full on; we just sit there and take it. But the reasoning behind it is?plentiful, with ideas as obvious as giving the book a more fantastical look in art direction and colouring (the blue, red, white and grey dominate the well drawn pages), to subtler narrative cores that pay off?astronomically?in the long run. As such a personal journey for this writer/artist, the?cartoonish?feel is essential so that it's visually more engaging and displays the distance set out between writer and experience. And thanks to the sharpness of the storytelling, it blends into the book with ease and style.

With this in mind, the 300 page book comes alive through three distinct acts, each with a good 12 or 13 chapters (varying in length) that bring Wright's comedic, dramatic, emotional or just plain imaginative chops to light. There are scenes so varied that one may consist of nothing else than Neil getting a sponge bath, while another shows Nye's frustration through a dream-like, crime fighting situation. Family, epiphanies, forgiveness, regret, anger and realisation: all major themes.?When I say this book has everything, I mean it -- through the humanity of the story (it is true, after all) these things are so present and come from a very real, very first hand "I felt what you're feeling times 10" place, and that carries true in dialogue, imagery, pacing; EVERYTHING.?

Now things aren't all about the present, mind, as Wright consistently throws around the framing of time -- glimpses of childhood, patches of the recent past, even flashes of the imagination and the unruly subconscious of a man coming to terms with his Father's impending death. Admittedly jarring at first, but as the jumbled story progresses things?shape?out and we're given more fleshed out characters and relationships as a result, which is?unimaginably?important for the conclusion.

As if the book wasn't brilliant enough on all these other merits, Wright completely knocks?obliterates it out of the (trailer) park within the last 80 pages with the?most moving moments I've ever seen in the comic book/graphic novel medium. At this point, through the snivelling, heaving, sobs and streaming tears (seriously), you realise all this stuff -- the humourous touches, the flashbacks, the animal charactertures, every last minor detail -- has been plotted excruciatingly for the inevitable finale.

Jaw droppingly powerful.

At the heart of Things To Do lies almost what you'd call an everyday story of life, death and family. But through Nye's emotionally driven scope it transcends into something?indescribably?huge, human and heart wrenching and warming at the same time. It's in this way that Wright has captured the essence of how moving real life can be for everyone and everything in this world once put in the right story structure and imagery.

Now this is one of the best things I've read, medium regardless, in my life. And it's only his debut. I think that warrants a slogan...
Nye Wright: Future Talent, No Doubt.

With Software Eating The World, Venture Will Deviate From Historical Returns, Horowitz Says

horowitzUpstart venture firm Andreessen Horowitz is betting that, as software permeates more and more traditional industries, venture returns will break out from their stable track record. "Historically, the tech industry has been sized at a certain level. Total returns have been very consistent over the past several years, but as software eats other industries, we think the technology opportunity is expanding itself," said Ben Horowitz, one of the firm's founding partners. Horowitz gave examples like Pixar eating Disney's traditional animation business and Amazon eating retail.

Estate Planning For Your Pets

314158_4635756812686_1711215745_n62% of American households have pets, and many of those households love and treat their pets as a family member.? Under the law, pets are considered property, but there are ways you can provide for them as though they were a real dependent.? If you don?t make some of these special arrangements for your pets, upon your death or inability to care for them, they could end up in a shelter or worse.?

Within the next week, the ASPCA is collaborating with LegalZoom.com to promote the company?s Pet Protection Agreement, which is a way for you to appoint guardians for your pet, leave funds for their care, and list their caregivers.? LegalZoom sells the agreements for $30-$70 and the ASPCA receives either 15% or 10% of the price.

Beyond the documents, there are several steps you should take to ensure that you wishes will be carried out if you die or become incapacitated.? First, get a commitment from your prospective guardian.? You should probably identify two or three potential guardians and provide for a back-up in the documents that you draft.?

Second, put the commitment in writing.? Draft a letter or a formal agreement that can be signed by you and the future guardian.? Then, share that agreement with family members or your vet so they know who should be caring for your pet(s) if you die or become incapacitated.? Lawyers advise not to include those instructions in a will because a will can be challenged, and if it takes time to sort that out, your pet(s) will likely need care long before that resolution is reached.?

Third, create a pet dossier.? This contains information about your pet?s allergies, vaccinations, likes and dislikes. A caretaker or vet can use this information to properly care for your pet when you pass.?

Fourth, you may want to provide funds for your pet?s future care. You can create a pet trust and name a trustee to manage the money you set aside for the care of your pet.? Four states do not yet recognize pet trusts, so you may need to consult with a lawyer to ensure your state allows pet trusts and set one up properly if it does.?

Finally, if you leave a lot of money for your pet in a trust, you may want to consider adding a no-contest clause for other beneficiaries, which would oust them of their share if they contest your wishes.?

See Karen Blumenthal, Pondering a Trust for Your Pet, The Wall Street Journal, Sept. 7, 2012.??

Special thanks to Brian Cohan (Attorney at Law, Law Offices of Brian J. Cohan, P.C.) for bringing this article to my attention.?

Assessment and Evaluation of Time Factors in Online Teaching and ...

IGI GlobalEditors: Elena Barbera (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Spain - ebarbera@uoc.edu), Peter Reimann (University of Sydney, Australia - peter.reimann@sydney.edu.au)
Call for Chapters
Proposals Submission Deadline:
September 15, 2012. Submission Date: May 13, 2013
Introduction
Although the time factor does not usually appear as a keyword for research and conferences, within the research community it is increasingly seen as a crucial aspect of online learning. This book is the first that combines empirical and methodological research to study the role of time comprehensively from three perspectives: from an institutional and management perspective (decisions and policies), from a technological perspective (tools and software), and from a pedagogical perspective (scaffolding, teaching and learning). Focusing on higher education, the book will not only provide important contributions to scholarly knowledge on temporal matters in online education, but also aims for improving the learning process and experience.
The book will consider the time factor in online learning in a broad meaning, as referring to phenomena that are related to history and path dependence, to sequence effects, and to rhythm and duration. All research objects related to what could be called ?tempo in e-learning? are included, which in this proposal are understood as being the questions related to time that bring about improvements in learning. In a generic way, this ?tempo in e-learning? is considered as a factor (and as a tool), one which is always present, and which spreads out into the planning and implementation of online education.
Time is a recognized social asset, which means it has great value in working and private life. For online learning, and other forms of distance learning, time management is vital, not only for learning, but also for work-life balance. All these aspects are global and specific at the same time, but talking about lifelong learning -that includes a high percentage of blended learning and on-line learning- temporal competences with efficient results become really prized.
Objective of the Book

The mission of the book is to build an innovative knowledge base about the power of time factors and to improve and move forward research on and practice of online teaching and learning. The book will signify a reference point for those who work with time aspects of on-line learning, both in theoretical and practical ways. The book will address this issue from three levels: firstly, time management in the institutional level of online higher education; secondly, the temporal aspects of technology and software which mediate online higher education; and thirdly, the temporal aspects of the interaction teacher-student or student-content. This will constitute a consistent and complete new approach to online higher education from the perspective of time.
Target Audience

The primary potential audience are educational researchers as well as psychologists and social science studies researchers (in all cases including PhD students), including? who are researching, studying, or teaching on e-learning issues. A secondary audience is higher education institutions who will be able to benefit from the book for making decisions regarding management of time, or chose of technologies and pedagogies in relation to time.
Recommended topics include, but are not limited to the following:

Online learning, especially in higher education, and:
-learning rhythms,
-curricular timings,
-contingent support for learning,
-student continuation rates,
-automatic feedback technologies,
-self-management study calendars,
-speed and duration of courses,

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before September 15, 2012, a 2-4 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by October 15, 2012 about the status of their proposals and will be sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by January 15, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Margaret Paul, Ph.D.: Running From Love

Do you want to find the love of your life but find yourself sabotaging relationship after relationship? Are you running from love? Do you know what the fear is that you are running from?

I hear over and over from people who email me: "I'm in a relationship with a wonderful man (or woman) and I'm pushing him (or her) away. I don't know why I'm sabotaging this relationship."

  • Do you find yourself finding little faults with the other person right after you decide you really like him or her?
  • Do you find that you are suddenly not as attracted to the other person?
  • Do you find yourself not speaking your truth to the other person but instead editing what you say and then feeling tense?
  • Are you feeling somewhat bored in the relationship, even though you've told your friends that you've found the perfect partner?
  • Are you getting preoccupied or finding other ways to distance yourself from the relationship?
  • Are you not returning phone calls, emails or texts to him or her?
  • Are you suddenly too busy to get together?
  • Are you wondering if, once again, you've picked the wrong person?

What's Really Going On Here?

What's likely going on is that you have a fear of losing yourself in the relationship. And the more you like the person, the bigger your fear of engulfment and commitment gets.

Why?

There are a number of reasons you might fear losing yourself in a relationship:

  • You've been taught that you are responsible for another's feelings, especially someone you love. You believe that if your partner is unhappy, it's up to you to fix it, even if it means giving yourself up.
  • You believe that taking loving care of yourself, with no intent to harm another, is selfish -- that being a caring person means you are willing to put yourself aside to do what another expects you to do, even if it's not what you want or need to do.
  • You have a deep fear of rejection, and you believe you have to give yourself up in order to avoid being rejected. You believe that no one will love you if you stay true to yourself. You are trying to control how the other person feels about you by giving yourself up to avoid rejection.

What all these fears come down to is a deep false belief that you have to give yourself up to be loved and to be seen as a caring person. Giving yourself up -- giving up your freedom to be yourself and do what brings you joy -- is a terrifying prospect. As long as you have these false beliefs -- and they might be unconscious -- you will likely find yourself running from love.

You will stop running from love when you are wiling to let go of trying to control how the other person feels about you by giving yourself up and instead risk being fully yourself. You can do this ONLY when you stop rejecting yourself.

How Are You Rejecting Yourself?

  • Do you tell yourself that the other person's feelings are more important than yours and that you have to put yourself aside for the other person? This is a rejection of self.
  • Do you judge yourself if the other person is unhappy with you? This is a rejection of self.
  • Do you make how the other person feels about you responsible for whether you feel you are okay? This is a rejection of self.
  • Do you ignore your own feelings and needs, instead making the other's feelings and needs important? This is a rejection of self.
  • Do you allow yourself to take another's rejection personally, telling yourself that you are inadequate if someone else rejects you? This is a rejection of self.

As long as you are rejecting yourself rather than loving and valuing yourself, you will feel afraid of losing yourself in a relationship. You might want to do the inner work necessary to learn how to love and value yourself enough so that you are no longer running from love.

Fitness for the Lacrosse Player | Natural Holistic Health Blog

If you enjoy this post, please share it using the buttons in the post, or email it to a friend, we'd really appreciate it!

Lacrosse is one of America?s oldest sports, if not the oldest. Lacrosse or Lax for short has always been the most popular in the Northeast but is now growing around the country. Lax is a unique sport in its own way and takes a lot of athleticism to be a good player.

That is one reason why kids are starting to pick up a lacrosse stick instead of a baseball bat or soccer ball. Lacrosse involves some physicality mixed into a high paced and high action game. The non-stop action is a testament to the sports appeal as well as the fitness required to play the game.

If you play or are interested in picking up the sport, here are some tips for general fitness but also those who call themselves Lax players

Stretch Before and After You Workout

Some athletes start and end their workout without stretching. However, stretching is not something that you want to forget. Stretching is something you need to do regardless of what activity you are into, especially lacrosse. The constant change of direction and speed while running can leave you susceptible to injury.

Run

Lacrosse players have to be able to run short and long distances. That is why you need to practice running at least five days out of the week. While playing lax you are always moving. This can be jogging around while the ball isn?t near you or sprinting your hardest when you are part of the play. This leads to a lot of change of direction and speed. Not only can you improve your play by running of the field, but it will also help prevent injury.

Perform Weight Training

A good lacrosse player has to be strong in order to handle the physical demands of the sport. Resistance training will help you keep your muscles strong. You should perform resistance exercises at least two days out of the week. Resistance training will also go a long way toward your play on the field as well as avoiding injury so you can stay on the field.

Eat Sensibly

There is always the temptation to eat poorly during the off-season, but you should still eat sensibly. A well-balanced diet will supply your body with the energy that it needs to sustain vigorous workouts. Healthy foods also help your body recover quicker.

Always Maintain A Mental Edge

Conditioning your mind is just as important as conditioning your body. Positive thinking is one of the keys to winning at anything in life. You should also surround yourself with positive people.

Before you buy your team uniforms for lacrosse, you will have to take the time to train. Stretching before and after workouts, running, weight training and eating sensibly will help you get your body ready for the next lacrosse season. You will also need to mentally prepare yourself for the upcoming season.

Where'd the time go? Obama girls now young women

(AP) ? Who were those willowy young women with Barack and Michelle Obama ? and where'd they hide little Sasha and Malia?

Four years is a long time when it's a half or a third of your life, and so TV viewers who hadn't seen the Obama girls much since 2008 might have been truly startled at just how much they'd grown when they appeared onstage with their father Thursday night.

After all, Malia Obama, now 14, who started (gasp!) high school this week, was just about as tall as her already tall parents.

Relaxed and composed, in a French blue sleeveless dress, Malia laughed with her father onstage after his remarks, and earlier sat and applauded with her mom and her sister, Sasha, dressed in a black-and-white checked frock. (Now 11, Sasha hardly fits in her parents' laps anymore, and even resists a cuddle, the couple ruefully told People in an interview last month.)

There was one sign, though, that the girls were still kids: "Yes, you do have to go to school in the morning," their dad warned them at the beginning of his speech.

What struck one former White House aide was the ease and comfort with which the girls were inhabiting their public roles.

"Their smiles were genuine and huge tonight," said Anita McBride, a former chief of staff to Laura Bush, as well as an assistant to her husband. "There was no awkwardness. They clearly have adjusted to their life in the public eye." McBride said she was also stunned by how poised and grownup the girls looked.

One reason Thursday's scene was so striking is that the American public doesn't see the daughters regularly, especially on TV. "There hasn't been a steady stream of images to relate to," says Sandra Sobieraj, a correspondent for People who covers the first family.

So for many, the most familiar images are from four years ago. At the 2008 convention in Denver, Sasha, then 7, fidgeted in her purple children's dress, little white barrettes on either side of her head.

"Daddy, what city are you in?" she called out in a high-pitched voice as her dad appeared on a huge video screen the night of Michelle Obama's speech. "I love you, Daddy!" called out Malia, 10, looking a bit older in a two-toned dress with straps.

Then came election night in Chicago. There was Sasha in a black party dress, bounding gleefully up into her father's arms, planting a big kiss on his cheek ? a reminder that young children were about to live in the White House for the first time since Chelsea Clinton, Amy Carter, and before them, the younger Kennedy kids, Caroline and John.

And of course there was the inauguration. Who could resist the sight of Malia, in a periwinkle-blue coat and fluffy black scarf, snapping pictures from her enviable perch on the inaugural podium?

Just the night before, she and Sasha, whose inaugural outfit was a light pink coat, had danced onstage with the Jonas Brothers ? a perfect example of how, as much as her parents vowed to keep their lives as normal as possible, the girls were truly celebrities from Day One.

For the president and first lady, protecting their privacy was an evolving skill. Candidate Obama quickly regretted, for example, an all-family interview granted to the TV show "Access Hollywood."

Once the family arrived at the White House, strict arrangements were in place. The news media traditionally respects the privacy of a president's young children and doesn't photograph or report on them unless they are in a public setting with their parents.

Yet the couple constantly talks about their kids. At times the president has embarrassed them, as when he told an audience that Malia once got a 73 on a science test. (He later apologized.)

Two years ago, when Malia first went to summer camp, the White House discouraged mention of it in the media, even though Obama mentioned it in interviews. And recently he revealed the state where both daughters had just spent a month at camp ? New Hampshire.

"They just love talking about their girls," says Sobieraj. "They get genuine joy from them, and so they talk about it. To a degree that makes the staff uncomfortable, because the line is shifting."

Other White House kids have led less public lives, perhaps a function of the times. Jackie Kennedy was so concerned about keeping her kids out of view that she organized kindergarten for Caroline inside the White House, writes Doug Wead, an expert on presidential offspring, in "All the President's Children." (She was out of town when her husband allowed those famous photos of Caroline and John in the Oval Office to be taken, Wead writes.)

And Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton were extremely protective of Chelsea, who entered the White House at an awkward stage. Her parents were furious when Mike Myers referred to their daughter in an insulting way on "Saturday Night Live"; the comic later apologized.

Whereas many White House children through history seem to suffer some sort of embarrassment or scandal, the Obama girls have had none.

"Compared to other White House families, this is clearly the most functional," says Wead, who chronicles a host of misfortunes of past White House kids in his book. (He's now working on a book about White House siblings.) "This has been one of the most successful stories."

McBride, who now directs programming on the history of first ladies at American University, says that no matter your politics, it's comforting to see a happy first family.

"Whether you support this president or not, you want to know that it's healthy and grounding and going well at home," she says. "They clearly are a family that's got it together."

The Obamas certainly relish spending time with their kids. The first family is well known to have dinner together in the White House most nights; Michelle Obama in her convention speech evoked the image of the family "strategizing about middle-school friendships."

That will likely help the president avoid some of the guilt that, Wead says, has afflicted some presidents of the past who spent little time with their offspring ? like that which he says overcame Ulysses S.

Grant on the occasion of his daughter's White House wedding. She left on her honeymoon, and Wead says the president then collapsed on her bed and wept.

"He had been so busy as president that he felt he had missed her life," Wead says. "It all had happened too fast for him."
