Lacrosse is one of America?s oldest sports, if not the oldest. Lacrosse or Lax for short has always been the most popular in the Northeast but is now growing around the country. Lax is a unique sport in its own way and takes a lot of athleticism to be a good player.

That is one reason why kids are starting to pick up a lacrosse stick instead of a baseball bat or soccer ball. Lacrosse involves some physicality mixed into a high paced and high action game. The non-stop action is a testament to the sports appeal as well as the fitness required to play the game.

If you play or are interested in picking up the sport, here are some tips for general fitness but also those who call themselves Lax players

Stretch Before and After You Workout

Some athletes start and end their workout without stretching. However, stretching is not something that you want to forget. Stretching is something you need to do regardless of what activity you are into, especially lacrosse. The constant change of direction and speed while running can leave you susceptible to injury.

Run

Lacrosse players have to be able to run short and long distances. That is why you need to practice running at least five days out of the week. While playing lax you are always moving. This can be jogging around while the ball isn?t near you or sprinting your hardest when you are part of the play. This leads to a lot of change of direction and speed. Not only can you improve your play by running of the field, but it will also help prevent injury.

Perform Weight Training

A good lacrosse player has to be strong in order to handle the physical demands of the sport. Resistance training will help you keep your muscles strong. You should perform resistance exercises at least two days out of the week. Resistance training will also go a long way toward your play on the field as well as avoiding injury so you can stay on the field.

Eat Sensibly

There is always the temptation to eat poorly during the off-season, but you should still eat sensibly. A well-balanced diet will supply your body with the energy that it needs to sustain vigorous workouts. Healthy foods also help your body recover quicker.

Always Maintain A Mental Edge

Conditioning your mind is just as important as conditioning your body. Positive thinking is one of the keys to winning at anything in life. You should also surround yourself with positive people.

Before you buy your team uniforms for lacrosse, you will have to take the time to train. Stretching before and after workouts, running, weight training and eating sensibly will help you get your body ready for the next lacrosse season. You will also need to mentally prepare yourself for the upcoming season.
