Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin pleaded not guilty to 21 counts of corruption, including conspiracy, money laundering and wire fraud, in a case that mention The Home Depot Inc., WWL-TV reported Wednesday.
Nagin got a $100,000 unsecured bond and was made to surrender his passport. His trial is scheduled for April 29 in New Orleans. Click here for more from WWL.
The Atlanta-based home improvement retailer is not alleged to have been part of any wrongdoing and has issued a statement previously to reiterate that fact.
As part of its case, the federal government probed Nagin?s involvement in a new Home Depot (NYSE: HD) store in the Crescent City.
The home improvement giant needed the city to sell it several streets that occupied the site where it wanted to build the store. But a city councilwoman wanted Home Depot to sign a ?community benefits agreement,? which the company did not want to do, according to The Times-Picayune.
Nagin, who served as New Orleans? mayor from 2002 to 2010, was an ally of Home Depot, the paper said. He allegedly offered to Home Depot CEO Frank Blake help dealing with community groups causing the home improvement retailer problems.
